My work is based on and is about images of myself and other disabled people in environments which are dominated by a society obsessed with physical beauty and perfection. I work with the notion that my self-identity changes depending on what situation I am in. I can be; a woman, a disabled woman, person, a disabled person, an artist, and a disabled artist. Who decides this and when? It maybe a particular experience that changes the way society sees us. Disability is part of my life's experiences therefore it is my art form.
My art uses the visual language of disability art aesthetic to depict ideals of my disability experience. This is seen by the unseen. I use ideologies surrounding myth against reality that are juxtaposed next to one another to evoke challenging and confrontational images of beauty.
As I evolve and develop my artwork I find myself battling between traditional oil/acrylic painting and ever evolving digital technologies. I am very interested in finding ways of combining traditional paint techniques with contemporary visual languages that challenge the viewer's perceptions of looking and seeing.
